For the first time, the CROP Organization of Hastings has decided to team up with the Hastings High food pantry in their annual CROP Walk. Many students from Hastings High volunteered their time to help with this fundraiser.
The goal of the CROP Organization is to end hunger and poverty in communities. They often join together with schools and other organizations to host fundraisers.
One student, sophomore Dylan Lemke, volunteered for his first on Sunday, October 9, 2016.
“I think it’s nice to help people and this is something that helps our school too, which is even better,” Lemke said.
This year’s walk had over 100 participants and raised over $2,600. 25 percent of these proceeds will go to the Hastings High food pantry.
This was the first year participating in the CROP Walk for the Hastings High food pantry, and sponsor Katie Funkey stepped up to walk.
“The CROP Organization not only helps a small group of people but helps the entire community of Hastings, so it was really nice of them to let us join them in splitting some of the proceeds,” Funkey said.
Another student, freshman Elle Douglas, also spent her time walking and donating to the cause.
“This was my first time donating,”Douglas said, “I had only heard about the walk this year when it was involved with our school.”
Along with the money raised, the food pantry also received gift certificates to purchase supplies. These donations will help increase the variety of our food pantry, and also help students and their families end hunger.
