High school is a place of beginnings and endings. The first time a freshman walks through the halls, and the last as a senior. A freshman’s first day of sports practice, and the last time a senior walks off the field with their teammates. Freshman year and senior year. However both the beginning and the end are exciting in their own ways.
Freshman year is full of new opportunities and changes. A new school, new teachers, and new activities. Before them lies their entire careers at HHS.
“It’s different from the middle school, they’re a lot more strict about things, which is kind of nice because then more people don’t screw around,” freshman Lauren Canady said as her first impression of the high school.
The graduating class of 2018 has just wrapped up their second week of school, and even though they’ve had to adjust to many different things, it seems to be going smoothly.
“It’s easier to have classes every other day because you can get homework done easier and you don’t have to stress about it as much,” Canady said.
Another thing the freshmen are beginning to think about are the activities they want to be involved in here, and what goals they want to reach.
“I plan on being involved in basketball and track, and I’ll see about some other things,” freshman Bryant Warrick said.
Some goals may be achievable within the year, and others are for all of high school.
“One of my goals for high school is to be looked up to by my younger and older peers,” Canady said. “I want people to look at me to set a good example and to be a good person in everything I do.”
On the flip side of things, the class of 2015 has just begun their trek through the final year of high school. With three years of experience behind them, they are ready to make the most of these last months.
Senior Alex Schmidt is already thinking about what she will miss most when leaving HHS.
“I think seeing all my friends in school the last time and playing on all my sports teams with them. It’s going to be sad to see that go,” Schmidt said.
Not only will many seniors miss their friends, but favorite teachers and classes as well.
“I’m going to miss being in drafting, it’s such a fun class and Mr. Skrdla is such a great teacher. It’s going to be sad to leave him here, but I’ve got to go on and live my life,” senior Gage Haack said.
However senior year isn’t all bittersweet endings and good-byes, for many it is jam packed with fun activities and events.
“I’m involved in, or have been involved in softball, basketball, soccer, science club, National Honors Society, and FMP. I’ve made a lot of new friends through my activities and I recommend everyone try and get involved,” Schmidt said.
So, whether freshmen are just getting started or, like seniors, have the finish-line in sight, high school can be an exciting place for everyone who attends.

“My time at this school has been a blast. There are lots of great people that you get to meet and know, and you get to watch the other students in your class grow up with you.” -Haack
