Prom is relatively known as the moment that is most looked forward to in an American teenager’s high school life. It is depicted as a pivotal point in a teenager’s time in high school in many movies and TV shows. Prom is mainly attended by juniors and seniors, but if an underclassman has an upperclassman date, they can also attend. Seniors Karson Howard, Lainey Benson, and Cianna Lane attended the Great Gatsby-themed prom at the Adams County Fairgrounds on Saturday, April 27.
“I thought the dance was good and I had fun with my friends but I’m sad that this was my last dance in high school with my friends,” Lane said.
All three seniors attended last year’s casino theme prom as juniors. There were many differences between the previous and present prom. For one, to prevent the loss of personal belongings, there was a storage place area that was supervised by the chaperones. There was also a balloon drop toward the end of the dance, which influenced people to stay until the end to win prizes that coordinated to numbered cards in each balloon, such as gift cards to local businesses. Lastly, drinks and treats, such as cookies, small desserts, Bubbl’rs, and other beverages were offered to students.
“It had better music where people could really dance and have fun,” Howard said.
Howard, Lane, and Benson all agree that this year’s prom was better and more improved than last year’s. Howard rated last year’s Casino theme an 8/10. Both Lane and Benson rated it a 6/10. They all rated the Great Gatsby theme a nine or 10/10.
“I enjoyed this year’s prom more because I think last year it was a little disorganized due to the relocation, but this year’s was very well thought out,” Benson said.
After prom, post-prom was held at the YMCA from 11 p.m. to two a.m. where there were games and food, as well as prizes that were raffled off throughout the night. There were activities like bouncy houses, cornhole, nine-ball, poker, basketball, and volleyball. Food and drinks, like Jimmy Johns, smoothies, coffee, water, various sodas, and a candy bar were also provided. The only main difference at this year’s post-prom was a photo station where friends and couples could have their picture taken and printed out on the spot as a Polaroid.
“I think some people claim it [prom as a whole] to be ‘overhyped’ because they don’t have interest in even seeing what it’s like or personally can’t find it enjoyable on a personal level,” Lane said.
