A new lunch schedule at Hastings High proposed by Dr. Szlanda began on the first day of school in the 2017-2018 school year.
The new lunch schedule now creates four different lunch periods, as opposed to three. With four periods lunch is cut into about 35 minutes.
Sophomore Meredith Brandt was at HHS last year during the old lunch schedule. “I prefer last year’s lunch system better because I liked spending time with my friends and taking a break from my long class periods,” Brandt said.
Brandt stated: “I know that some of my peers agree with me about lasts years being better,” when asked if she had heard any student responses.
Dr. Szlanda really thinks that this schedule is best for the students.
“I got feedback from the entire staff, I researched what other school do as far as open campuses, and with all that information, that’s where the idea for the four lunch periods came up,” Szlanda said.
Szlanda thinks one of the best outcomes is that students get more learning time with this new system.
“It actually added about 15 minutes to the periods 6 and 7,” Szlanda said.
Senior Ellie Moncrief finds that this lunch schedule isn’t as bad as a majority of the upperclassmen thought. “At first we were all kind of upset about the period being shorter, but it actually has turned out to be enough for most of us to go home and get back in time.” Moncrief said.
Cutting the periods into four different sections has made lunch a less crowded area, and gives students extra class time which is good, because most teachers in periods 6 and 7 give the extra 15 minutes to quietly work on their homework that was assigned.
