“Beyond School Walls is a corporate based mentoring program designed to give students exposure to the work place in a corporate working environment,” Program Director Dawn Conant said.
Junior Shaynn Chitty knows exactly what she wants to do in the future. Chitty has taken both accounting courses offered here at the high school and when she heard that accounting would be offered in Beyond School Walls she jumped at the opportunity.
“I would like to get a major in pharmacy and minor in accounting. I want to own different pharmacies and by having an accounting background I would be able to understand the numbers a little better,” Chitty said.
As high school students know, someday they are going to have to choose a career path, whether it would be a doctor, lawyer, accountant, or engineer. Not many know for sure exactly what they want to do, but others may know exactly what they will be doing in the future.
Beyond School Walls in not just for students who know exactly what they would like to do. It can also be of help to students that have no idea what they would like to do after high school, and helping them see what there is.
Junior Claudia Hernandez knows the area she would like to go into but isn’t quite sure exactly what she would like to do. So, by joining Beyond School walls Hernandez hopes to gain more insight into a Human Resources officer.
“I plan on going to a college here in Nebraska. I would like to go to UNO and get a bachelor’s degree or masters in business,” Hernandez said.
In the program a student is paired with a mentor who has a career that the student would maybe one day like to pursue. Once matched, the student and mentor meet every two Mondays for about an hour. When meeting, the pair might do things such as activities involving the workplace or talking with their mentor about his or her job. So whether students want to be an accountant, lawyer, doctor, or engineer, Beyond School Walls is a great program to get involved in. If interested talk to Counselor Pat Vogel in the guidance office for more information.
