After selecting finalists from a total of 21 applicants, the Hastings Public Schools Board of Education selected Jeff Schneider as the upcoming superintendent. Schneider has worked in the district for 25 years, starting as a math teacher at the middle school. He then became the assistant principal, then principal of the middle school before becoming the director of finance.
“Our current superintendent, Mr. Kautz, has been unbelievably good to me and just a mentor. I’ve learned so much, and so, when the position came open, I decided why not?” Schneider said.
Schneider endured a baseline application process that included writing to 10 job characteristics and making a video with three interview questions. He was then selected by the board as one of the three finalists, in which he completed another interview and met with eight groups to discuss the future of Hastings Public Schools.
“It was one of the best experiences I could have. I spent all day talking about HPS, and anyone that knows me knows that is easy to do because I am passionate about our cause,” Schneider said.
Schneider will take effect as superintendent on July 1, 2019. For the next five months, Schneider will be in a position resembling an intern to Mr. Kautz.
“He has been such a good mentor and is so passionate about our school district. I get some on-the-job training before I’m actually in that role. It is incredibly valuable to spend these next five months learning from him,” Schneider said.
Schneider claimed to have three main goals to strive for next year. These include focusing on our finances to avoid program cuts, improving facilities, specifically to find a purpose for Morton Elementary School, and focusing on school improvement goals.
“There are 4,000 people in this community counting on us. I am most excited to work with people who are passionate about helping kids,” Schneider said.
Schneider sees current superintendent Craig Kautz, who has held the position for 14 years, as a role model, but he is confident in the community to help guide him through this role.
“I’m a little nervous about following him [Mr. Kautz], but at the same time, I know he will be in our corner. I’ll be able to pick up the phone and call him when I need help or advice,” Schneider said.
