Hastings High School has the opportunity for students in language classes to go on trips after learning the language for at least two years of that class.
One of the classes that is taking the next trip is French, in the school year 2023-2024. They are doing the fundraising this school year of 2022-2023. One of the first fundraising activities is selling Pastry Puffins and as the year goes on there will be more fundraising.
“We do fundraisers to help with the cost but there’s also scholarships that you can apply for. One student got $1,000 towards her trip. The old French teacher put away funding for students so they are able to go on trips also,”sophomore Peyton Criss said.
After the fundraising the next thing is all the paperwork and requirements that goes into being able to go on the trip. Then you go into being able to pay the payments and then more planning.
“Planning the trip was different from other years because we weren’t sure if we would be able to go due to covid. Cecrle worked very hard to make sure we could go by moving the trip to the summer and talking with our administration,” senior Sarah Diaz said.
Before you go on a trip you are required to write a letter to the family. Introducing yourself and your family and things you like to do. This way to help the family you are going to learn about you and reasons why you want to go on the trip.
“I really look forward to living with a host family and being able to experience their culture first hand, and I wanna go on the trip because I just think it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to be a part of other people’s tradition and history,” sophomore Karson Purvis said.
When you are done with the planning and all the requirements then you go on the trip. The trip is 10 days long all together. On the first day u go to fly out from Omaha to Paris. On day two through seven you are with your arranged families. Day eight and nine you spend it visiting places in Paris and the last day you go home.
“The trip was such an amazing experience for me especially since it was the first time I traveled out of the country. I loved speaking French with locals, being with my amazing host family, and traveling with my group of friends.” said Diaz.
