They’re loud. They’re proud. They pump up the crowd. Say hello to the two new male additions to this year’s Tiger cheer squad: Juniors Dylan Lemke and Davis Turpen
After 34 years, Hastings High has once again welcomed males to their squad – and the squad is more excited than ever.
“The recommendation of Savannah Santos caused me to seriously consider it. It just made sense; it wouldn’t get in the way of anything and only stood to be beneficial,” junior Davis Turpen said.
From 6:30 a.m. practices to awards at the UCA Cheer Camp, this squad is practiced and ready for the upcoming season, with a few tricks up their sleeve.
“It was an unfamiliar feeling, being surrounded by over 50 girls for 12 hours a day. That being said, it was a lot of fun,” Turpen said. “As a team, we did well during the day of competition. I was personally awarded All-American with Dylan Lemke, which included being offered a trip to London to be in the New Year’s Day parade.”
These boys are stacking up their schedules in order to balance academics, sports and other activities.
“School will come first before cheer, so I plan on doing any school work right after school before any games and making sure to spread out my study time well,” junior Dylan Lemke said.
Going into their first intense cheer season, the boys on the squad aren’t backing down.
“The guys definitely bring different dynamics to the squad. We are able to do much more stunting with them and we are able to do pyramids,” cheer coach Brenda Opbroek said.
As for competitions, the team is unsure of how many competitive events they will be attending this year.
