The lifestyle of Shelby and Christian Yost interestingly took a turn after their honeymoon in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The young newlyweds, Shelby 27, and Christian 26, decided the honeymoon was time to relax.
“Our days were mostly filled with early morning coffees, reading, board games, and late-night swimming,” said Christian.
Shortly after the couple realized something was wrong.
“Both of us noticed that Shelby was struggling to walk before we admitted it to each other. It was about three weeks after our honeymoon that we finally had a conversation admitting something wasn’t right,” said Christian.
Shelby and Christian have always been actively working as a team together and individually, although Shelby becoming unable to walk was not predicted.
“Shelby’s first visit was to Hastings Family Medical Center, and it was originally scheduled because we thought she had a sinus infection. From there, we were referred to Mary Lanning, and soon found ourselves at UNMC in Omaha,” said Christian.
Once discovering something was not right one of the tests for Shelby was a lumbar puncture to test the spinal fluid.
During said lumbar puncture, “Shelby experienced a serious leak,” said Yost, “This created quite a bit of pressure in her spine and really sent us on a wild ride.”
The couple now had another complication because of the lumbar puncture along with the unknown diagnosis.
“While Shelby did experience some unfortunate complications as a result, the test neither improved or worsened her walking,” said Christian.
As a result, more tests and several meetings occurred. Meanwhile, they were being discharged without an official diagnosis.
“After countless scans and tests, we know it’s nothing major,” said Christian.
After they left the hospital they had to decide as a team if they favored in-patient or out-patient rehab.
“We opted for outpatient so that we could be in our home and Christian wouldn’t have to travel to come to visit me,” said Shelby.
While Shelby does currently walk with the guidance of a walker the couple remains hopeful even though they could have never imagined this situation.
“We are hopeful that we will start to see progress here in the next couple of weeks,” said Shelby.
Simultaneously, Shelby and Christian remain grateful for their friends and family.
“A sweet couple from Christian’s home church even started a GoFundMe to help us with medical bills,” said Shelby.
Due to the fact, they were never able to get a definite diagnosis, it’s been hard to decipher when “normal” can be possible.
“It has been about a month so far, but we’re hopeful that we’ll be back to normal, sometime within the next couple of months,” said Shelby.
Christian remains faithful in his religion when talking about the upcoming events for Shelby.
“We haven’t put our finger on what is going on yet, but we know we have a BIG god looking over us,” said Christian.
