The 2017-18 school year has come, along with many changes to Hastings High, one major change, the switch from the Macbook Air laptops to Chromebooks.
There has been talk about switching to the Chromebooks over the past few years and the main question being asked: why?
“The main reason was the Macbook Airs were needing a lot of repairs,” paraeducator Steve Adelson said.
Some students would rather have the old Macbooks than the Chromebooks.
“I prefer the Macbooks over the Chromebooks they are just overall better computers” senior Isaiah Lopez said.
There have been rumors going around school since it has made the switch that the administration is unable to view students’ screens while they are in school. These rumors have been proved to be true.
“As of now we can’t, but we plan on changing that if the technology is there and we feel the need to do so,” Adelson said.
Students have differing opinions on the laptops. Some students enjoy the compactness of the computers, while others just enjoy the ownership that comes with keeping the new computers.
“My favorite part about having them is probably just having them because I am a freshman and I have never had something like this,” freshman Brittany Oschner said.
The Chromebooks overall looks lean more on the negative side, according to students.
“My least favorite thing is probably the way they look. Macbooks just looked so much nicer,” Oschner said.
The worries for these upcoming school years with these new laptops consist of repairs, but the administration is looking forward to a good few years in hopes that these computers will end up being beneficial.
“Of course we have worries damage over the summer how they are going to get those fixed other schools that have done this have had less damage than we would of thought, so with the ownership of the four years they seem to have a little more responsibility,” Adelson said.
Adelson wants everyone to remember to never leave your computers in cars, to keep them locked up in locker rooms, and to always take good care of them.
