Welcome to a new school year, a new schedule, new teachers, and new school supplies. The one thing students look forward to is seeing their laptops. The school decided to throw a curveball this year with a computer switch up.
Many students have noticed that they received new laptops this year and with no student names on them. This was a great disappointment to multiple students as they have been caring for their “own” laptop for multiple years. Junior Josh Jarmer disliked this change saying,
“It’s absolutely ridiculous, I’ve taken care of my computer for the past two years and I received a computer with dented corners and my laptop charger was torn up and wouldn’t work.
As most students had this same experience, there have been a lot of questions circulating around school. Trent Kelly, Director of Technology for HPS, explained how they will now go about minor dents and dings.
“If we noticed a laptop that was abused beyond the usual minor dents and dings we gave those computers back to the original owners. After three years of use we did expect that most of the laptops would have some minor cosmetic issues.”
This was done to expedite the check-out process. The cost of putting the names on the computers was also an issue.
So why would they stop applying names on the laptops if it’s a disadvantage? Well three good things came out of this, faster check-out/check-in, excluding the price of the name tags which cost the school around $3 per laptop, and finally time.
Time is one of the biggest factors of why we removed the names. Every year, staff has to take off all of the senior’s stickers and then apply all of the freshman stickers. Also including numerous new students in between.
As this might not directly affect the student, the cost of repairs and how we will be charged due to damages has changed. The school already planned for this, Trent Kelly explained this,
“However, if we noticed a laptop that was abused beyond the usual minor dents and dings we gave those computers back to the original owners. After three years of use we did expect that most of the laptops would have some minor cosmetic issues.”
So major and obvious damages like broken screens or missing keys will have to be paid. All cost must be paid off before walking across the stage to graduate.
