Love is in the air!
At Hastings High School, the student council will be hosting its first Sweethearts Dance in the south gym on February 13th.
The Sweethearts dance was inspired by the Winter Formal during the 2023-2024 school year. Last year, the Winter Formal was cancelled due to scheduling conflicts, leaving a number of students disappointed.
“Not being able to have the Winter Formal last year was really upsetting to me, so I am excited to have another dance that is not prom or homecoming,” Student Council President Madison Fielder said.
The idea was collectively brought up and supported by student council members.
“We wanted to have something like Winter Formal but different,” Fielder said. “I really loved this idea. I think it will be really fun.”
The student council coordinated with administrators, reserved the gym, planned the event, found chaperones, and set up advertisements for this dance. Most chaperones will be Student Council members’ parents, while smaller committees will handle the decorations and activities.
“I think that setting up is alright. [It’s] not my favorite part, but as long as all the students are having a good time, it makes it worth it,” Fielder said.
Attendance is open to all students at the high school from freshmen to seniors.
“I think that the sophomores and seniors are mainly excited, because the sophomores did not get a dance last year and the seniors get one last dance before their final prom,” Student Council Officer Hadley Buschow said.
Outside dates will not be allowed because the student council does not want to push more work onto the administrators.
“We know people are upset about not being able to bring outside dates, but that is more work for the administrators, and we already feel bad that one of them has to attend the dance,” Fielder said.
The council plans to keep the tradition of having a formal for years to come. But it is not just a dance for these students. The money raised from the dance is given to non-profits.
“Having a dance is a win-win because our students can have fun and we can raise money for those organizations,” Fielder said.
More information about the event can be found on Instagram @hhsstuco_ or around the school on their posters.
“This dance is going to be fun, so if you are not busy, bring a date or some friends. You don’t have to be dating someone to enjoy it!” Buschow said.
