During a soccer game in April, junior Kate Delaney collapsed to the ground. Delaney later found out that she tore her Medial patellofemoral ligament (MPLF).
“A girl was going for the ball the same time I was. I planted wrong, and my foot got stuck in the turf, and my body went one way, and my leg went another,” Delaney said.
After the accident, Delaney had to have surgery on May 4th. Delaney tore her MPLF, which is the ligament that connects your kneecap to your knee.
“I stepped wrong, I felt three pops in my knee and I fell to the ground and then it hurt for 30 seconds. Then doctor Reimer straightened it out and then I couldn’t walk,” Delaney said.
Besides being a varsity soccer player, Delaney is also a big contributor to Hastings High’s swim team. Not only has Delaney’s attitude helped the team but so have her leadership skills.
“I have known Kate for two years. She has made me more positive, and she’s very optimistic. She brings up the energy on the whole team,” Morgan Baker, a junior at Adams Central said.
Because of her surgery, Delaney couldn’t practice swimming in the summer as she normally does.
“I couldn’t swim at all this summer, so I had to do PT. I couldn’t get in the water, and when I could, I couldn’t kick or do turns,” Delaney said.
Scribner is confident that Delaney will have a great season.
“Kate has been a big contributor to the team, she is a real leader,” Delaney’s swim coach, Charles Scribner said. “I think once she gets in competition her mind will be more at ease and Kate will have another good season.”
