Spotlight breaks a wall between what people think about the catholic church, what they want to see, and what it really is. Probably some people are not going to like it, but if the truth doesn’t hurt you, you are going to love it as I did. This movie is inspiring and pushes you to look beyond the surface.
This movie is based on a true story that takes place in Boston in 2001 when the team Spotlight starts an investigation against a catholic priest accused of molesting kids.
At the beginning, it looks like just one priest, John Geoghan is accused. As the investigation proceeds, the reporters interview victims and have the chance to look at some official documents. From their researches, they find out that is not just one priest. The problem is way bigger than they expected.
The story is told looking really close to each reporter’s work. It could look like a documentary, but what makes it different from a documentary is the fact that emotions are shown from the beginning to the end. These events, and revelations have a huge effect on the Boston Globe’s staff. No one can sleep well for months and at the end they are completely different people. They are not the only ones affected; the victims have to remember horrible moments of their lives. When the story gets published is a shock for the community.
Rachel McAdams, Michael Keaton, and every other actor do an excellent job in acting as reporters, with the same passion and commitment as the actual reporter put in this case.
The structure of the plot allows the audience to follow what is going on smoothly and to feel exactly the way the characters feel.
The director Tom McCarty does an excellent job in mixing investigation, suspense, drama, and emotions that could make you tear up.
“Spotlight” gets several nominations at the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards, winning for Best Picture in 2016.
This movie is an example to follow for everyone who wants to be a reporter, but anyone can learn from it. We should never be afraid of telling the truth, even if it goes against one of the biggest institution in our society.
