There’s no doubt about it, school and sleep are related, I don’t need science to tell you that. When I don’t get enough sleep school drags and it becomes a challenge, yet when I crash at nine o’clock school is a breeze. Now I don’t really choose when I get to go to bed, it’s a struggle to juggle (haha) school, work, friends, and family. After all that, sleep usually becomes my last priority.
I’ve talked to adults who went through highschool years ago and they agree with me; school demands a lot nowadays. We are pushed by teachers, parents, scholarships, future employers, to make the ‘All A Honor Roll’ or to join this and that. It’s all fine and dandy to have some challenge, that’s what makes you better right? But when does it become too much?
I often find myself struggling to get my recommended hours of sleep each night, and thats only with a full honors load. Surely I can’t be the only one, can I?
Any student I talked to that was semi-involved said that school was a major reason they weren’t getting all their recommended Zzz’s. When you don’t get your sleep you doze off in class. When you doze off in class you get behind. When you get behind school stresses you out more and you get less sleep.
“It’s a vicious cycle,” said sophomore Bailey Gragg.
All this blame gets thrown on the students, but what are teachers doing about this issue? Some are very understanding and will try to engage a tired kid in class or give them a different activity. I applaud these teachers; these are the ones that care about our education. Others will relate to the student and allow them the sleep they so desperately need. Occasionally one will deal with the teacher that nags at them and offers no solution.
We can all agree something needs to change. I don’t know who here is to blame, has society changed? Socially we have revolutionized and I think the people in power just haven’t realized that yet.
