Starting with the Hastings Highs 2022-2023 school year, English 12 Honors Dual Credit has now become an opportunity for students to take during their final and senior year of high school at Hastings High.
Before English 12 Honors Dual Credit became available to the students of Hastings High, English 12 was taught by Dr. Erickson. The class came with difficulties as the class was much more fast paced than regular English 12 classes. With the chance to now take the class for dual credit makes it much more challenging to most students.
“Honestly I wasn’t expecting the class to be too much work because I’ve taken other honor classes before and have done my fair share of high school English essays or essays in general, but sometimes the class is a lot for a student,” Crystal Miller said.
Although the class can be demanding at times, it has shown that it can also be facile and not to hard on the students. With Dr. Erickson teaching the class, the students are able to make connections with a teacher that treats the students as college students. Not only is Dr. Erickson one of the teachers of English 12 Honors, but he also teaches psychology and yearbook as well. Erickson has a substantive amount of experience with teenagers to make the class not so hard after all.
“I would say the class is very fun. Doc is a fun guy and you can really hold a conversation with him,” Caden Anderjaska said.
As the seniors prepare themselves for the beginning of the end of their senior year, they still have much to learn and do. As a requirement to graduate from Hastings Senior High School, the seniors have to write their senior paper which consists of a 13 page long essay on research of a topic the student chose. In English 12 Honors, Erickson has the students do research for assignments and practice.
“I don’t enjoy research but also I do sometimes enjoy learning as learning can be cool. It’s monotonous. And overall, no it’s not challenging honestly. It’s just a lot of volume to write,” Marcus Chavez said.
In addition to the extensive amount of dedication, effort, and time the students have to give the class, the class gives the students a head start on their future lives after high school and what they will eventually decide to make of themselves.
“I spend too much of my time trying to make my writing perfect and the class is kind of hard too but it’s already helping me out in school and I’m ready for whatever else we’re going to learn in class,” Miller said.
