Story by Federico Bonadonna
After the success of the play The Stinky Cheese Man and other fairly stupid tales, appreciated by children, teenagers, and adults, our theatrical school body is preparing a new play called Big Fish.
The play was really appreciated by the public. Katie Funkey, the teacher who brought on the entire project, is very pleased with the result.
“The thing that made me very happy was that we had a very responsive audience that laughed a lot during the show. This is very important,” Funkey said.
The Stinky Cheese Man was the first play of this year and many students contributed to its success.
“We spent three months memorizing the lines, building the set and creating a character”, Audrey Weeks said.
Also, the work behind a play is sometimes a great memory of the process.
“My best memory from all this work is the preparation process because you meet the actors every day and have a lot of fun with them. I also enjoy creating costumes and the scenery,” Funkey said.
Every student during the play had the opportunity to play at least two roles, studying more characters in the story.
“That was my aim,” Funkey continues, “I wanted to give everybody space and characters so that everybody could have the chance to shine in more roles”.
Working on theater does not mean just repeating lines all day long. Behind the curtains, the actors/actresses make strong friendships and have a lot of fun.
“After a play, I feel very sad because I don’t get to see the other actors/actresses every day and I enjoy every single moment with them,” Weeks said.
“I love kids because they are creative!” Funkey said.
Overall, Funkey was pleased with the result of the play.
“The strong points of it are that it is very family-friendly and kids can play different roles so that the spectator remembers all of them. The weak point may be that is not very long, but I believe that its duration is very appropriate for the type of play,” Funkey said.
Now, the next step is Big Fish, the “Novel of Mythic Proportions” by Daniel Wallace.
“I am very thrilled for this project. It is a lovely story and we want to try a musical.
I hope we will have the same success of The Stinky Cheese Man!” Funkey said.
The auditions for Big Fish will take place in December and Mrs. Funkey invites everyone who is interested in it!
