School is starting and fall activities are coming into full swing. With that comes the annual fall play production. This year, The Stinky Cheeseman and Other Fairly Stupid Tales, promises a complete makeover to some known fairy tales such as The Gingerbread Man.
This particular play was chosen to suit the actors that will participate.
“I try to have a variety of themes and time periods during the course of four years,” Director Katie Funkey said. “This show is focused on a young audience, so it will be awesome to share our work with younger students!”
In the auditorium on the mornings of August 28 and 29, students auditioned for the play. Any student is allowed to audition, no experience is necessary. The process starts with a packet that has both a monologue and a short scene from the play.
“Then you prepare one of the selections,” senior Haley Mazour said. “Then go to one of the audition days and perform it for Mrs. Funkey.”
Mazour practices by getting into character.
“I think of a backstory, thinking of what the character is thinking. Then I read the audition through a few times in different ways, and decide which way sounds the best,” Mazour said.
After formal auditions, Mrs. Funkey releases a call back list and from there you do a cold reading. This means you read a scene from the play that you have not seen before. September 4, the official list came out. Mazour is the narrator Jack.
The next step towards putting the play on the stage is the read through and rehearsals. A read through is practicing the play without costumes or makeup, it is a basic run of the play. On september 12 the stage rehearsals begin.
Both Funkey and Mazour have loved their time with the theatre program.
“Every show is amazing, whether it’s something emotional and deep, or silly and funny, the HHS Theatre department always manages to be fantastic,” Mazour said.
“Our whole cast is so talented! One of the great things about this show is that it has an ensemble cast,” Funkey said.
The Stinky Cheeseman and Other Fairly Stupid Tales will be shown in the Hastings High auditorium on november third & fourth at 7:30 pm and november fifth at 2:30 pm. For adults, it is ten dollars and for students it is five dollars, or free with an activity ticket.
