The Fall Sports team
By: Valerie Mendoza and Elizabeth Weber
The 2018 fall sports are here and ready to rumble. Every athlete has prepared over the summer to make themselves the best athlete they can be for their respective Tiger team. Everyone is very eager to start the season off with a bang.
TOUCHDOWN! If you are not excited about this year’s Hastings High Football Team just ask coach Charlie Shoemaker about his seniors. He said that they have been more committed this year than they have ever been before.
“They really put their hearts into it and it’s a bunch of good kids, so we’re excited to get going with those guys and send them out winners,” Shoemaker said.
The Hastings High Football Team has started to progress from last year’s play. The football team has been working all summer long lifting weights, conditioning. They have put in time and effort working on 7 on 7 plays.
“The work this team did in the weight room made them bigger, stronger, and faster on the field.” Shoemaker commented.
Batter up! The Hastings High softball team has been working very hard this year to achieve their goals. They have a great group of girls this season according to Coach Pete Theoharis.
“Every softball season is unique, we’re blessed with a great group of girls that work hard and that have done a great job building a positive team culture which makes it fun,” Theoharis said.
The softball team has girls who are passionate for the game and who work hard everyday at practice, Coach Theoharis commented. Without any seniors on the team this year, the sophomores and juniors have taken the responsibility of leading the incoming freshmen.
The upperclassmen are showing good character and leadership to the underclassmen in hopes to lead their team to a victorious season.
Bump, set, spike! The Hastings High volleyball team has been training all summer long to prepare for the upcoming season. During the summer months they conditioned, held a team bonding event, lifted weights, as well as having open gyms to practice their skills.
“We have four really good quality leaders, you can see how they developed and how they learned to love each other. That’s the biggest thing we’re really focused on, just finding ways to show their love on the court, and for the game and each other,” Hepner said.
Not only is it Hepner’s goal to have a winning season, but it is also to have the girls show love for each other on and off the court.
“You look at wins and losses, everybody has that in their mind and at the end of the day we’re just trying to love each other and play to the best of our abilities. And I think we will like the results,” Hepner said.
In order to have a successful season, Hepner feels if they show love and play their best they will reach their full potential.
Runners set… GO! The Cross Country team has a great group of athletes this year. Coach Scott Rosno is excited to start the season off with new faces and learn more about them.
“There are so many different personalities that it’s just going to create an atmosphere of team unity,” Rosno said.
With only just a couple weeks of training, Rosno has seen progress from the team.
“We are excited to see the improvement that they’ve made in the first four weeks,” Rosno said.
This year, the upperclassmen have been good role models that the coaches can rely on when they are not around.
“Our program is strengthened and matured to the point that we as coaches don’t have to dictate the training,” Rosno said.
Game, set, match! The tennis team has put in the effort over the summer by having one on one lessons. They have been putting in the effort to work very hard this year.
“Improvement, we have 6 out, one senior, 4 sophomores, and 1 freshman. So offly young.” Sunderman said.
The tennis team has been doing very well when playing and practicing.
“They are all good role models,” Sunderman said.
