This year, Hastings Senior High started an outside school club in hopes to change the halls and lives of many people. Science teacher Comron Yazdgerdi, alongside a couple of junior boys, started a local chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA).
Yazdgerdi has been a leader for Hastings College’s FCA for ten years and decided to start it at HHS.
“I walked down the hall to see so many clubs and to hopefully have Jesus in this building, would be a good thing,” Yazdgerdi said.
Yazdgerdi has high hopes for FCA: he wants the kids to mature and grow in their walk with the Lord so that when they get to college they are not persuaded by the world.
“I hope FCA brings about a new era in the school where kids are not afraid to talk about God with their peers. The more people know Jesus the better,” junior FCA leader Isaiah Brant said.
The Fellowship of Christian Athletes meets every Sunday at 7pm. They also have a Twitter account that gives reminders and updates on the club, @FCAHastingsHigh. There are also posters all over the school on when and where the meeting that week is being held.
“Everyone is welcome to come every weekend and join in the activity we have planned for that day, and every activity is different,” senior FCA leader Haylee O’Connell said.
Every week the activity changes. Every meeting they start with an ice breaker game, then they get to the main activity. Last week the group all met at Hastings High and played dodgeball. Many people enjoyed playing dodgeball but to some people playing a game is not their favorite part.
“My favorite part about FCA is getting a group of people together to have a good time and talk about God. I love to see what God is doing in other people’s lives,” Brant said.
And some people’s favorite thing about FCA is the warm and happy environment.
“I like that all the people are so inviting and welcoming towards everyone. They make it a very pleasant environment to be in,” O’Connell said.
Just like Yazdgerdi, some of the members have been involved in FCA once or multiple times before. FCA is an international program which is how many people have been involved or started FCA in local areas.
“I have been fortunate enough to get to go to many FCA camps over the past summers including FCA Distance running camp and FCA leadership camp. These camps made me want to get an FCA huddle started at the high school, just like so many other schools that already had one,” Brant said.
If you’re interested in FCA at Hastings High you’re more than welcome to join the fun. If you have any questions look at the posters hanging up all over the school, Talk to Mr.Yazdgerdi, or check twitter.
On February 4th FCA will be having a super bowl party. It starts at 5pm and is hosted at 6000 N.Blaine.
