FMP, Freshman Mentoring Program. The program only a few upperclassmen are a part of.
It is a group of students that meet once a week and give freshman advice about school and life.
Being in FMP is a privilege, and with privileges come rewards. Such as the infamous FMP Parking.
FMP parking is special parking in the school parking lots, a small yellow triangle signifies that only FMP mentors can park there.
“FMP parking is a benefit for the time and effort we put into helping the freshies,” senior Morgan Karloff said.
Every once in awhile the school will do a random parking check. Students who parked in FMP parking and are not in FMP will get a violation.
“It is up to the school resource officer, it isn’t in any particular schedule, but if I see a violation I will give a sticker to that car,” Principal Jay Opperman said.
When there is a random check some students get caught and their car is decorated with a lovely bright orange sticker.
“Officer Beahm puts a bright orange sticker on your car that is almost impossible to get off, it sucks,” junior Megan Borrell said.
The violation does require the students to pay a fine to the office.
“All parking violations are $10, We felt ten wasn’t a number too big that it wasn’t too much to pay but enough to be painful,” Opperman said.
Luckily the money made from the violations helps pay for more parking stickers and anything else the school needs. It’s a win for the school, lose for the students.
To FMP mentors it is easy said that it is straight up annoying when non FMP’s park in FMP.
“It’s isn’t quite fair if someone who doesn’t have the qualification to park in FMP parks there, especially because they are the best parking spots,” said senior Erica Thompson.
Parking in FMP for non FMP kids can be a risk.
“The students that park there and are not mentors know they are not supposed to and they have to deal with that,” FMP coordinator Kendra Laux said.
FMP parking was originally started to give the mentors a privilege.
“Being a mentor is a privilege. Mentors do a lot for our school and it is a way to say thank you,” Laux said
So, FMP parking is a little thank you to the ones who give up their time for others.
