A new show choir at Hastings High directed by Jon Marquez will feature both singing and dancing.
Freshmen Grace Canady and Sarah Spilinek are eager to join a new choir in their first year at Hastings High.
“I had always thought show choir would be fun after watching Glee, but I was just excited to try something new with singing,” Spilinek said. Canady has similar feelings.
“I knew I would regret it if I didn’t at least try,” Canady said.
“Show choir is all about dancing,” and both of these freshmen are nothing but excited.
“It brings people out of their shells and makes them more comfortable with themselves and their abilities,” Canady said.
Both Canady and Spilinek are inflamed for show choir to get into full swing and see what it’s all about.
“I think it will be a different experience that will be fun to try,” Spilinek said.
The students are very thrilled for the challenge show choir brings, although it is more work than a regular choir.
“I kind of do want credits now that it is brought up, I already get credits for choir, and this is twice the work, so definitely.” Spilinek said.
Not only are the students enthusiastic, so is the director.
Marquez explained that this is the first time Hastings High has ever had a show choir. In previous years, there has been swing choir. He illustrates that swing choir is a smaller group of students and they sing music from the Big Band Era. He also says that show choir is more competitive than swing choir.
Marquez’s real reason for bringing show choir to Hastings High is that it’s fun.
“It is a great way to get kids excited about choral music,” Marquez said.
Keeping kids excited and involved is one of Hastings High main goals, and show choir seems to be doing just that.
