There are many new faces at the high school, but these new freshmen are “excited” to experience the new opportunities.
Changing buildings and seeing new faces can be a big change, however, freshman Addy Nelson is used to big changes having moved to Hastings from Lincoln just two years ago. Switching to high school wasn’t a very big change for her.
“I wasn’t nervous about going to high school, but I was nervous I wouldn’t find my classes,” Nelson said.
Another freshman student, Ticen Johnson, is also no stranger to adapting, moving from Omaha to Ord, then Kenesaw, and finally landing in Hastings for the past nine years.
“It’s big but easy to figure out once you get around a couple times. I was a little nervous but kind of excited for sports,” Johnson said.
Freshman Isleen Robinson was able to adjust and find her classes during the open house, so she was prepared for her first day.
“I knew where my classes were after going to the open house,” Robinson said.
The freshmen have new opportunities, including new classes and joining the upperclassmen in sports they didn’t offer at the middle school. All three freshmen participate in a fall sport: Addy and Isleen in volleyball, and Ticen in football, both of which are happening right now.
“I’m most excited for the volleyball season!” Nelson said.
Joined by the new school are the new policies. They include: putting phones away in the phone caddies, the e-hall passes, and the hall monitor system. However, the policies aren’t just new to freshmen, they’re new this year for everyone. There are mixed opinions on the new rules, some saying they’re beneficial, and others saying they’re ‘too much’ or unnecessary.
“The new policies are good for learning, but I feel like if someone was on their phone a lot then putting it in the holder is necessary,” Johnson said.
Also, homecoming is happening on Saturday night, September 23, after the volleyball tournament. Homecoming is new to all freshmen because there were no formal dances at the middle school. It seems most people are excited to get ready and go dancing.
“My thoughts on going to Hoco are that if you have someone to go with, or you just want to have fun, then go do it! Personally, I’m not much of a party person, but I’m excited that my friends are excited,” Nelson said.
