The fruit and vegetable bar is one of the more unique things about the lunch program at HHS. It offers a good selection of fruits and vegetables that the students may choose from each day. It comes included with the standard lunch and students can take as much as they like.
Some of the more common choices for a fruit / vegetable among students includes a salad, carrots, or an apple. The choices are pretty consistent each day, but some days they have a ‘rarer’ choice like watermelon or strawberries. Sophomore Aaron Heras said that he really enjoys the watermelon when it’s available, and wishes that they had it more often.
Students have a lot to say about the fruit and vegetable bar.
“I really like the apples and feel that the fruit and vegetable bar is perfect,” sophomore Max Hahn said.
Some students aren’t quite as happy with the fruit and vegetables as others.
“I take salad each day, but only because I have to. The quality isn’t that good either and I’d rather have them take it out altogether,” said sophomore Rishav Srivastava.
Nancy Thelander works in the cafeteria and is in charge of preparing the fruits and vegetables and keeping them stocked.
“Mandarin oranges, pears, and bananas are the most popular items. I think it’s good that we offer fruits and vegetables to the kids because they probably aren’t eating them at home,” Thelander said.
While it may not be as good as Godfather’s pizza every other Friday students are glad they have this feature at lunch.
