The Hastings High girls basketball team opens their season with their first game on December 2nd at Seward High School. Their next game will be December 3rd at home.
“We come home for Crete the next night,” said head coach Greg Mays.
Both Seward and Crete will put up a good competition for the girls basketball team.
“They are both pretty good teams, should show where we are at,” Mays said
The girls basketball team has several experienced girls this year.
“We have a chance to be good, we got five people back that have played a lot,” Mays said.
On the team this year, there are both new and old players that have a chance to show other teams what they can bring to the game.
“We got a couple people who I think are ready to step in and help us, that’s a little thin,” Mays said.
In basketball teams you want as many good players as possible but also new ones that can show others what they got so the coach and other players know where to put her.
“You kinda like to be eight or nine deep instead of six or seven but I think we have a chance to be pretty good,” Mays said.
The Hastings High girls basketball team have been direct champions the last two seasons.
“I’m tired of silver plaques, I want a gold one,” Mays said.
This year, the girls basketball team is aiming to go to state.
“I’m going to be very disappointed if we don’t have a very very good year,” Mays said.
When the girls warm up and practice, Coach Mays helps them do their best for games.
“I learned more about what’s not in my control as a coach, my job is to run the best practices I can and to get them the best prepared as I can” Mays said.
During games, anything can happen. That’s why coaches teach and help their players practice.
“When metaphorically bullets fly in a game they can perform their best, I think those are the things I learned while coaching,” Mays said.
