The varsity girls soccer team defeated the Holdrege Dusters 4-0 in the 2018 season opener yesterday.
The Tigers got off to a slow start but picked up the intensity in the latter part of the game.
āI thought it went really well. I was hoping for more goals in the first half so I would be a little less stressed, but we did really well,ā assistant coach Melissa Everson said.
They finished strong with four goals. Sophomore Dulce Lopez had one, junior Sydni Sullivan had one, and junior Abby Dewitt clenched the last two goals.
This is Dewittās first soccer season with the Tigers. She moved from Minnesota before the winter sports season. She received a varsity letter in basketball and hopes to continue to add to the success of HHS athletics.
āI know that this team is very experienced and well coached so Iām very excited to contribute as much as I can! I wanted my teammates to be successful and I want to help fulfill all of our goals,ā Dewitt said.
One of the main goals for the Tigers is to return to the state tournament and finish what they started last year. Their game plan is simple: control the ball offensively for the majority of the game.
āThe team has set many goals for this season, but I think they all come down to playing to our best ability and controlling the ball the entire game. If we are able to show up and play this way, our goals of winning and returning to state this year will come more easily,ā senior Julia Reimer said.
Both the girls and boys teams will go on the road to Norfolk on Saturday, March 17. The girls game will begin at 12:00 p.m. with the boys following at 2:00 p.m.
