The Hastings School Board approved the Hastings High School French Trip on February 14 to go to France this summer. The trip will begin towards the end of June.
Normally before COVID hit the U.S., the French students went to France on an annual trip during spring break in March. Due to COVID, the students going on the trip are planning to go in the summer instead.
“I’m happy we get to go in the summer instead because the weather will be nicer, and everything will be even more beautiful,” junior Sarah Diaz said.
Mrs. Cecrle is the sponsor of the trip as she teaches French at Hastings High. Mrs. Cecrle and the students will fly out of Omaha on June 23. They will return to Omaha after the trip on July 2.
“I’m gonna miss the experience of seeing school there, but I don’t really want to go to school on vacation. It’s gorgeous over there in the summer, and to see Versailles with all of its beautiful colors, and you can’t see that in the spring,” junior Joshua Torres said.
Along with seeing new sights, the students will be eating French food.
“My parents and I made a croque madame like last year, and I don’t think we gave it too much justice. I’m very excited to try an authentic French one,” Torres said.
The students will be staying with a host family during their time in France. A questionnaire that the students had to fill out was sent out to the host parents so they could learn more about their student before arriving in France.
“The trip is so exciting, but I’m so nervous to stay with someone else for a couple of days, especially since we don’t speak the same language. Even though I am so nervous, I know the host family will be great and I’m so excited to get to know them,” Diaz said.
The student’s trip will be filled with numerous sightings of famous landmarks in France. The Louvre is just one of the many they will be visiting.
“I cannot wait to see the historic art in the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay,” senior Jaziel Armendariz said.
Due to the global pandemic, the trip does require a vaccination card to board the plane. All of the students plan on getting vaccinated, if they haven’t been vaccinated already.
“After three long years of anticipation, it is a relief that even through a global pandemic, we are making our trip a reality,” Armendariz said.
