Every year, Hastings High holds a blood drive for the eligible participants and select students help throughout the day. A blood drive is a time for individuals to donate blood. Donating blood can save a life and possibly several lives. One donation of a pint has potential to save as many as three lives. If your blood is separated into its components; red cells, platelets, and plasma, it can be used individually for patients with specific conditions.
“You should donate donate because it saves lives, that’s the simplest thing,” Rob Kerr said.
The process of donating blood is safe. It isn’t possible to get any type of infectious disease because a brand new, sterile needle is used for every person.
To be eligible to give blood, you must be 17 and 110 pounds, this is for your own safety. However, in Nebraska, you can give blood at 16 with parental consent.
Many students and teachers came to give blood on March 8.
“The blood from Hastings High is taken to a regional blood bank and then they distribute it to hospitals that need it, it doesn’t necessarily stay in Nebraska,” Kerr said.
If you are looking to give blood and you missed the blood drive at the high school, you can donate at First Congregational Church on March ninth, 16th, 23rd, 28th, and 30th with American Red Cross.
If you plan on donating, be sure to drink plenty of water beforehand and eat a healthy meal. Bring your driver’s license and parental consent form, if you are 16. If you would like any more information visit the website http://www.redcrossblood.org/.
