Hastings High School has officially abstained from taking temperatures within the school. The measure was originally put in as a measure for keeping Covid-19 contractions at bay while the risk of transmission was far higher. The choice was made originally at the beginning of the year, by Mr. Schneider. The decision to stop mandatory temperature checks was also made by superintendent Schneider.
Dr. Szlanda, the school principal, was a large part of the decision to stop mandatory temperature checks.
“Our Superintendent, Mr. Schneider, asked for feedback from each principal on taking temperatures. That feedback provided him information to make the decision to discontinue taking temperatures,” Szlanda said. Assistant principal’s Mr Rippinger and Mr. Laux, as well as Dr. Szlanda, were the main aids in Mr. Schneider change in current school policy.
It’s likely that over the summer, the review of whether other measures will be used next year will be made, and possible changes to mask, cleaning, and other vivid HPS protocol.
Dr. Szlanda has made it clear that overall, temperatures were a success and teachers were aware of COVID protocol. Szlanda claims there is no doubt that struggles with administering temperature tests were nonexistent.
“HHS will finish the school year strong. We all need to maintain our focus and continue to meet expectations. By doing so, we will have a successful school year we can reflect upon and be proud of,” Dr Szlanda said.
Despite the struggles that everyone has endured this year, it’s hopeful that we can all look back on this past year with at least a small amount of positive reflection. This pandemic hasn’t been easy by any means, but if we can continue to get through with a shared attitude of resilience, we can get through anything.
