Seven Hastings High students traveled to Charlotte, North Carolina for a DECA Inc. trip from November 14-17.
DECA members attended workshops about leadership, job readiness, marketing strategy, stress management, and college preparation. HHS DECA Vice President of Career Development, senior Moses Rhodes, focused on gaining life skills at the DECA conference.
“I learned how to manage my time better and how to be a better leader,” Rhodes said.
DECA sponsor and business teacher Angelo Martinez accompanied the students, who spent Friday flying to North Carolina and settling in before the weekend’s activities.
“Friday we went to go karts, some arcade games, laser tag, and did fun things like that before our opening session,” Martinez said.
Each student paid for their own flights and all additional expenses, but according to chapter president Prestyn Long, the experiences gained from the DECA trip outweigh its cost.
“(The trip) was definitely really expensive, but I think it was a great experience for our chapter,” Long said.
The highlight of his trip was attending DECA After Dark at the NASCAR Hall of Fame on Saturday night. The event included food, DJs, and interactions inside the museum which contained interactive displays and full-sized vehicles from across time. This was only one part of the trip, which Rhodes believes was beneficial to him.
“Yes, I would definitely recommend the trip. I learned a ton of great information and met a bunch of great people,” Rhodes said.
