Hastings Senior High has welcomed 252 freshmen on campus this 2022-2023 school year.
Starting freshman year can be either a nervous or even exciting experience for many teens. Addison Clark and Kaylynn Waters are both new freshmen at HHS and felt weary but ecstatic about the new school year.
“I was so excited to go to the high school,” Waters said. “I was also a little nervous about the first day because I was scared of getting lost, but the teachers were very helpful.”
HHS is a big school compared to middle school, which can make it hard for freshmen to adjust to it and feel comfortable. Clark mentions how she was overwhelmed and how many people have helped her out.
“I did get lost a couple of times, but I quickly found my way around thanks to the nice teachers and upperclassmen,” Clark said.
There are also many new sports, clubs, and classes that are introduced to incoming freshmen. Waters plays softball while Clark is a part of the dance team and they both mentioned how excited they were to meet new people.
“I definitely made new friends through dance team, and that’s why I recommend joining a club or a sport because you can make new friends that way, especially upperclassmen,” Clark said
On the first day of school, there are many different things that freshmen might not be used to like the block scheduling, and the number of people walking in the hallways including all of the new faces.
“My main nerves were feeling overwhelmed in such a big school,” Clark said. “The block schedule also threw me off a bit but I slowly figured it out and I overcame that pretty fast.”
Both Clark and Waters took the first full week of school in and realized it was not that bad and both mentioned how the time flew by because they were having fun and experiencing new things while meeting a lot of people.
“My first day was amazing and I was ready to come back the next day for more and after the first week I realized it was not that bad and I figured out where all my classes were without getting lost,” Waters said
With advice for future freshmen, Waters also mentions not being scared or nervous as the teachers and classmates are very nice. Clark also gives advice on how to look at the new school year.
“For any future freshman, make sure to get involved in activities because you can make new friends that way and get to know the high school better,” Clark said. “And do not be scared to ask any questions as the students and faculty are very understanding.”
