Nebraska Football started off their season by playing The University of Illinois. On Saturday, August 28, at 12:00 pm. The game didn’t go as planned, the Huskers lost 22-30.
The Huskers had a rally going towards the end of the game. There just wasn’t enough time for them to come all the way back and win the game over Illinois.
When I was little, my dad would always see if he could buy tickets on sale so our family could go up to Lincoln and watch. Every time my little brother and I got to the gates, we would get so excited for the balloons that they gave out.
The Huskers would score their first touchdown and everyone would let go of their balloons. My mom was always taking pictures of the balloons, when they got higher in the air.
Carrying on tradition, Husker fans still release balloons on the first touchdown of every game.
The next game day for them was Saturday, September 4. They played against Fordham University.
As Husker quarterback Adrian Martinez ran the ball in for the first touchdown of the game, the stadium lit up and everyone released their balloons.
The team showed out to play that day and proved many people wrong about how they can play and come together as a team.
The third game of the Husker football season was on Saturday, September 11. They played the University of Buffalo from New York, the Huskers won 28-3.
That game took place on a special day in history, 9/11. In honor of the heroes and victims the Huskers wore white camo on their uniforms, and had a special tunnel run dedicated to the heros that helped the United States on the day of 9/11.
Seeing the Nebraska football team show their support for 9/11 victims gave the Hastings High softball team the idea to do something for their games on the same day. The team wore white flowers in their hair to remember all the victims and heroes.
The following week, the Huskers went on the road for the first time this season. They went all the way to Norman Oklahoma. To play Oklahoma University on Saturday, September 18. In a close game of 16-23, the Huskers didn’t pull off the win against the Sooners.
Against Oklahoma they had a good game going and a chance to beat a top team but when it came to the end of the game the special teams messed up big time and lost the game.
The Huskers next game is this Saturday, October 2 against the Northwestern Wildcats. It is another home game, the homecoming game. The official game time is at 6:30 pm.
