When students here at Hastings High come in as freshman they may be pumped for high school musical, singing, dancing, and kissing the love of their life on top of the school. In all reality, what they really got is teachers lecturing and assigning homework. Some freshman may tell you that they couldn’t wait to leave 8th grade and have the freedom of being in high school. While seniors will tell you they would kill for one last day in 8th grade. It all starts when you walk in the doors as a freshman.
Freshman Grace Dinnell was so excited to come into high school and get all the freedom she wanted. Sadly, just during the first two weeks of high school, she realized that that was not the case.
“I thought we would be having fun in class, I thought that teachers would be more fun and not just shove homework down our throats,” Dinnell said.
Many freshmen come to this sad realization early on.
“I’m afraid I’m gonna fail all my classes,” Dinnell said.
Freshman fear failing a class. However, the reality is that administration has added things like T3 to help keep students from failing. And teachers are willing to help students just need to ask.
Freshman Cecilia Beahm is so excited for high school and getting to play so many sports.
“I plan to play a sport for each season throughout my High School career,” Beahm said.
Playing a lot of sports can sometimes get tricky for freshmen as they are just figuring out how to balance a high school schedule with their sports.
Senior Annie Grealish can tell you from experience how tricky it can be.
“I struggled my freshman year, mostly because I was trying to figure out how to balance arching Band and Volleyball with school,” Said Grealish
“Throughout high school things got a lot less stressful and I began to figure it all out,” Grealish said.
For some seniors leaving high school is a very scary thing. Senior Andrew Moritz will soon be leaving for college.
“I have the fear of the unknown. I’m afraid to think of what college will be like away from my family and friends,” Mortiz said.
High school can be a scary thing for everyone, It doesn’t always end up with singing and dancing and falling in love with your high school sweetheart, but it can be a successful experience.
