During an ordinary away basketball game in Beatrice, senior Abby Dewitt prepared with her normal routine as if it were any other game.
“Before every game, I pray that I play for God’s glory and pray that he keeps me safe from injury,” Dewitt said.
As DeWitt was dribbling across the court to score, she took a wrong step and collapsed.
“It was in a game and I was going for a layup full speed towards the layup and I pushed off my left leg and then it just popped,” Dewitt said.
As a young child, Dewitt was passionate about basketball and knew it was something she wanted to go to college for. Dewitt bonded with her father through basketball.
“Me and my dad connect through basketball. He played overseas, and he has taught me everything I know about basketball,” Dewitt said.
As Abby was in her living room, she heard a phone ring. Her dad picks up the call from the doctor. They all waited to hear the doctors diagnosis. Later on, Dewitt discovered that she had a torn ACL.
“Me and my family were sitting on the couch, and we got a call. It was the doctor, and my dad said ‘Its torn Abby’, and we all started crying,” Dewitt said.
Head girls basketball coach Greg Mays has known Dewitt since the beginning of her junior year, as well as coached her for 2 years.
“Abby was our leading scorer, as a senior she was one of our most important leaders on the team, she was also a very hard worker,” Mays said.
Dewitt has impacted not only herself but others on the girls basketball team. Senior Kamri Adler has know Abby for two years.
“She is super outgoing, and she is really easy to talk to. She brings a huge shine to our team,” Adler said.
“I want to thank my team they have been with me and given me presents, and they have been so awesome. Also, my coach has been very supportive,”Dewitt said.
