CMA and ACM award winner Luke Combs released his second album What You See Is What You Get on November 8, 2019. The 29 year-old country singer released six of the seventeen songs from the complete album in an EP called “The Prequel” on June 7th, 2019.
My five favorite songs from the album are “Does To Me”, “All Over Again”, “Angels Workin’ Overtime”, “Better Together” and “Even Though I’m Leaving.”
In “Does To Me,” Combs features country singer Eric Church. This song is about “a lot of run-of-the-mill things that aren’t really exciting to anybody other than yourself” said Combs. This song gives anecdotes about Combs’s life including his baseball career, high school prom and his family. In this song, Combs discusses these memories and how they didn’t seem like much then, but they mean a lot to him now.
“All Over Again” is about Combs falling in love with his fiancée, Nicole Hocking. One of the lyrics in the song is, “And we’re falling all over again, like a flashback to way back when” as Combs describes falling in love with his fiancée when they were younger. Luke ends the song with “Oh, we’re all over again. Well, I know where we’ll wind up. And I guess goodbye’s just too tough.” I think these lyrics signify that he will never leave his fiancée and that he is very thankful for what he has.
Next, is “Angels Workin’ Overtime,” which was the first song I heard in the album. This song illustrates to listeners how hard he works as a singer and how he gets through his tough lifestyle. In the song, multiple people ask him how he gets by and he always responds with, “I got my Angels Workin’ Overtime.” This is one of my favorite songs of the album because he paid his tribute to his loved ones that have passed in the form of a song.
The last song of the album, “Better Together”, explains how some things are just meant to be. This song also proves his love for Nicole. For example, Combs sings, “your hand fits right into mine like a needle in a groove” which means that they are perfect for each other. This song also explores some of Luke’s favorite things such as coffee, sunrises, deer hunting and music.
The hit song of the album “Even Though I’m Leaving” is an emotional one. This song is about Luke’s relationship with his dad, who is still alive, and how he can’t bear the thought of life without him. The chorus of the song is written in his dad’s point of view in heaven, saying, “Just ’cause I’m leavin’ It don’t mean that I won’t be right by your side when you need me. And you can’t see me in the middle of the night. Just close your eyes and say a prayer. It’s okay, I know you’re scared when I’m not here. But I’ll always be right there. Even though I’m leavin’, I ain’t goin’ nowhere.”
In conclusion, as Combs’s second album, he did a remarkable job and is becoming even more successful in his music career. Combs is also going on tour with What You See Is What You Get and fans are already looking forward to his next album.
