In a school where many things are in need of improvement, shiny and new are nearly obsolete words. But these words are starting to make a comeback with the addition of the new science wing.
A major improvement from the rooms downstairs, the science wing has all new facilities, fume hoods, ventilation, and all the latest technology.
Physics teacher Jim Fielder says that the rooms offer new and different opportunities for students.
“Although the curriculum won’t change, it offers lots of opportunities that we didn’t have downstairs,” he said. “Everything is clean and modern, the electricity is wired better, and it is correctly ventilated. Downstairs, the air would remain stagnant for several days.”
In addition to everything being updated, student safety has been greatly improved.
“Safety is much better because we have the shower and eye wash. Downstairs we would have complications with experiments because of the environment,” Fielder said.
The lab space provides more square footage for class.
“I really like it because it is really spacious,” said sophomore Nyabong Duang. “There are a lot more white boards and I like how there are rows of desks, not individual ones.”
Maybe more important than the facility itself is the impression that it leaves on the students that study there.
“The science wing has affected the attitudes of students,” said Fielder. “They have appreciation for what we now have.”
The science wing has made major improvements to the school and to people’s attitudes toward science. The state of the art facility has also made people very excited in general.
“This is the best facility in the state for science,” said Fielder. “It’s cool.”
