What were you doing at 6:30 this morning? If you are like most high school students, you were probably still in bed. But the Hastings High marching band has other ideas. At 6:30, they were hitting the streets.
The Marching Tigers have been hard at work since June practicing music and marching fundamentals.
Now those fundamentals are being put into action. The band gathers every morning at 6:30 to set and practice their show and to parade march.
Band director Erin Beave says that parts of this year’s show are harder than in the past.
“Main Street on the Fourth of July. It’s based on some concert band pieces and some orchestral pieces, and also a little bit of Katy Perry’s “Firework” thrown in there for fun. The first movement is fairly difficult music and marching wise, I would say, more difficult than what we’ve done in the past”
For many seniors, this is their fourth and final season marching in the Hastings High band. Many of them feel that this show is going to be very different than any of the other shows they’ve done.
“It’s got a lot of different step styles and I think it’s more challenging than any of the others.”
Even though this year’s show is harder than shows in years past, many band members have high hopes for the season. From parade to field, the marchers hope to be the best they can be.
“One of our goals this year is to get a one at State, which we have not been able to do for quite a few years. And we were so close last year that I’m hoping that we can just go over that bar”
“I hope to see ,obviously, performance excellence, both visually and musically. Butt I hope to see students take ownership of the show, make it their show instead of our show. That we’re saying, ‘here you go here’s your music, here’s your drill,’ but make it their own”
