Every student ever has had to take a math class. Every student ever has had strong feelings about his or her math class. Some kids love math, like junior Sam Reimer,
“It’s my favorite subject by far because it comes easy to me and I enjoy doing it so much that I often get a hard time from my friends about it! But, the teachers I’ve had so far in the math department have really done a good job of teaching it and keeping it my favorite subject.”
While others would much rather do anything else than go to math, like junior Jamie Johnson.
“Math stresses me out and I don’t like it. Pre-cal is really hard and I just don’t get it. I think I would rather fake sick than go to math class.”
Many students wonder when they will ever use math after graduation. It’s pretty difficult to picture yourself graphing a parabola after high school. Math is a universal language. Anywhere you go, you can communicate with a multitude of different people they can understand you when you speak Math. The language of numbers and math can help anyone do anything.
“I think math is important in everyday life, but not necessarily the math we teach. On the other hand, the skills a person learns with that math are important, like problem solving,” math teacher Mr. Ortegren said.
“Where will I ever need to use this?” The answer to that is that you need it in any vocational field that requires higher education, such as computer science, engineering, medicine (doctors), trade and commerce analysts, so basically, anything that has to do with science. Well, what if you don’t want to do anything with science?
Mr. Ortegren went on to say, “You use a lot of math every day, for example, how much does something cost or how much to save every month, or how much interest to put on a loan, but that kinda falls into the kinda math that we teach, which is algebra and calculus and other higher level skills for computer engineering or other similar professions.”
Whether one is rich or poor, educated or uneducated, if one is taught the basics of arithmetic, he or she can lead and happy life, all because of math. Similar to being literate in reading and writing, counting also triumphs in life.
