The 27 year-old country singer Morgan Wallen released his second album Dangerous: The Double Album last Friday, January 8, 2021. The album includes a whopping 30 songs, including some songs that have already been released as singles along with new songs.
If it came down to it, I would pick “Sand in My Boots,” “More Surprised Than Me,” “865,” “Wonderin’ Bout the Wind,” and “Blame It on Me” as my favorite songs of this album. However, I have a lot more favorites.
The opening song of the double album is called “Sand in My Boots.” The first time I listened to this song, I instantly fell in love with it. The song describes a former lover that began on the beach and then ended abruptly. Wallen is left with only sand in his boots, hence the name of the song. This song reminded me a lot of his older songs, especially from his first album. As of right now, this song is in my top three favorite songs of the album. My favorite lyric from this song is “Oh, but now I’m dodging potholes in my sunburnt Silverado… headed right back to my roots.”
“Wasted on You,” the second track of the album is currently Wallen’s number one song on Apple Music. This song has received a lot of attention since the album was released. It’s about a breakup and how much time and money he wasted on this former lover. I really like this song’s lyrics and overall meaning. It reminds me a lot of his song “Whiskey Glasses” from his first album in 2016. My favorite lyric of “Wasted on You” is, “I swore this one’d be different, my heart wouldn’t listen… looks like I’m learnin’ the hard way again.”
The third track of the album, “Somebody’s Problem” was released on November 20, 2020 along with three other songs as a teaser for the album. It was written by Wallen after he saw a girl in Alabama “driving a 4-Runner with a 30A sticker on the back windshield.” His friend asked him who she was and she replied with “somebody’s problem.” I really like that this song tells a story and it is very heartfelt. This song has amazing lyrics but I think my favorite is, “I’d love to drown in them heartbreaker blue eyes.”
“More Surprised Than Me” is the fourth song of the album. This song is another song that I instantly loved. The song is about Wallen being underestimated in his education, career and mainly his love life. He sings to his girl that no one is more surprised than him that they are together. He explains that he must’ve really done something right to get to be with her. This is another one of his songs that really tells a story. This was a hard choice but my favorite lyric is, “must of done something right in another life.”
The fifth track of this album, “865”, is about remembering a former fling years later and doing anything to forget about it. “865” is the area code of around where Wallen is from, Knoxville, Tennessee, so he has a connection to it. I have a feeling this song will become a very popular song, especially as a breakup song. Wallen apologizes for the number of calls 865-409-1021 will be receiving, “Whoever’s number that is, I am extremely sorry” he said. My favorite lyric of “865” is, “was trying to down you out tonight but first sip, I could feel you on my shoulder.”
“Wonderin’ Bout the Wind” is definitely one the most heartfelt songs I’ve heard Wallen sing. He wrote this song while in quarantine last year, while everyone was going through a rough time. The song grasps the feeling of going through a hard time and doing anything to be okay again. The lyrics in this song are some of my favorites from this album. If it came down to one lyric to be my favorite it would be, “I guess I’ll leave it to something bigger to figure it all out but I sure could use a little breeze right now.”
“More Than My Hometown” was released on April 17, 2020 as a single and people went crazy over it. This is probably in my top five favorite Morgan Wallen songs. It tells the story of Wallen falling in love with his high school sweetheart and growing up with her. However, as they get older, the girl wants to move away from their hometown. Wallen is dedicated to staying in his hometown which ends their relationship, saying he can’t love her more than his hometown. I absolutely love this song and my favorite lyric is, “‘cause I love you more than the feeling when the bass hits the hook.”
“Warning” is written in the perspective of after a heartbreak and wishing that person came with a warning. This song is like “865”; they’re both break up songs. I really like the beat of this song, although it is definitely more pop than country. The lyrics of this song are very thought out and you can hear the emotion in Wallen’s voice. I have a feeling this song will grow on me even more. My favorite lyric of this song is, “everything about that night I thought I wanted should’ve come with a warning.”
“Blame It on Me” is about one of Wallen’s former girlfriend’s life changing after the two dated. He gives several instances such as taking gravel roads, only listening to country songs and not wanting to go to the city as ways he rubbed off on her. He explains to her that she isn’t to blame for these changes, he is. This song is so funny and sweet and it’s definitely in my top five favorites of this album. I couldn’t pick just one favorite lyric for this song. So, my favorite lyrics of this song are, “if you’re up to see the sun before you fall asleep, baby, blame it on me” and, “if them weekend boys get boring, I don’t mean to wreck it for ya, yeah, it’s my bad girl if you had the time of your life.”
“Silverado for Sale” is already a fan favorite. The song is about selling a Chevrolet Silverado truck in order to buy a ring to propose. Throughout the song, Wallen recalls his memories in the truck. I really love the meaning behind this song, the meaning and the lyrics are very heartfelt. The song does an amazing job of explaining the attachment to a first car and all of the stories associated with it. I have a feeling I will love this song even more with time. The lyrics of this song are amazing and I’d say my favorites are, “spent a lot of Friday nights up under the stars” and, “God knows all the stories it could tell, I got a Silverado for sale.”
Some honorable mentions are “Cover Me Up,” “7 Summers,” “Dangerous,” “Somethin’ Country,” and “Whatcha Think of Country Now.”
To wrap it up, I think Wallen did an amazing job on this album. I predict that this album, being three years in the making, will be one of the most popular country albums of this year. Wallen’s fans, including myself, are absolutely loving his second album and are looking forward to seeing where his music career goes.
