Music evolves more each year, with new genres and upcoming artists giving students a mix of different feelings and experiences.
Students listen to music much throughout the school days and in hallways, although the handbook states, ‘any cell phone or other like devices may not be accessed in any hallway, classroom, or locker dressing room area during any class period’.
Students all have their own unique group of favorite artists, songs, and genres. Cecelia Perry, a junior at HHS has explored many different kinds of music throughout the years.
“I listen to some rock but I also like girly pop. My number one on Spotify last year ended up being Mitski, but I think my personal favorite is Acid Bath,” Perry said. “My favorite song is probably Cheap Vodka by Acid Bath.”
Students’ favorite songs are played much throughout the week, having made it to the top of their playlists.
“I listen to music a lot, basically every day,” Perry said. “When I listen to music in the morning, it’s always something fun to make me want to get out of bed. In the middle of the day, sometimes it’s something sad, but at the end of the day..absolutely heart-wrenching.”
According to Harvard Medical School research, a recent systematic review and meta-analysis (a study of studies) showed that the use of music interventions (listening to music, singing, and music therapy) can create significant improvements in mental health, and smaller improvements in physical health–related quality of life. While the researchers found a positive impact on the psychological quality of life, they found no one best intervention or “dose” of music that works best for all people.
“Music is like an enhancement of emotions. I think it’s some sort of escapism. It’s something you listen to with the intention to make yourself feel okay,” Perry said.
Zac Wilson, a junior at HHS uses music in much of the same way, as most of the students at HHS.
“My favorite genre of music is hip-hop. My top favorite artists are Kendrick Lamar, Kanye, Lil Wayne, and a few more,” Wilson said. “My favorite song is probably ‘Untitled 08’ or 07, and Mortal Man by Kendrick.”
Wilson often utilizes music throughout the week at all different times.
“I think I listen to music every hour of every day,” Wilson said. “I enjoy listening to music.”
Many students use music to process emotions, or for some, to help with everyday life.
“Music gives life meaning, it’s inspiring and a very artistic craft,” Wilson said. “There are so many types of music, so no one can even feel left out.”
Being there are so many different types of music, Alexis Dominguez, a junior at HHS, has chosen his favorite genre.
“My favorite genre of music is R&B and soul music,” Dominguez said. “I really like Kali Uchis. My favorite song by her is Moonlight.”
Dominguez listens to different artists and songs a lot throughout the day.
“I definitely listen to music every day. it’s really helpful,” Dominguez said.
Music is a relief for some students and motivation for others, and everyone interrupts it differently. Having access to music during school hours can be both helpful and relaxing for students.
“Depending on the song, music makes me want to sleep and it usually makes me feel calm and relaxed,” Dominguez said. “Music is great at doing that, especially with really talented artists.”
