National Honors Society is a group of students who are determined to demonstrate and partake in community service activities that help better the society around them.
The members of National Honors Society or NHS in Hastings High officially held their first meeting of the year on September 12th. In their first meeting, they are currently trying to discuss giving out authority positions to the members and plan for the year ahead of them. NHS is an opportunity for students to get more involved.
“The most rewarding experience for me was the blood drives because I don’t think I ever would’ve participated in one if it wasn’t a requirement. Now I plan to do as many blood drives as I can as I get older,” Senior Lilliana Widhelm said.
Joining the NHS has been a memorable time for most of the members. While some of the members of NHS have academic achievement memories, others have ones of generally having a good time with volunteering and meeting new people.
“It is not as excruciating as it sounds, and it does not take a huge amount of time in order to fulfill the necessary requirements to keep your status in the NHS. It is a fun opportunity to work with your friends to help better the community around you,” Junior Lainey Benson said.
NHS members at Hastings High School are offered multiple opportunities once they send in their application and go through the process of joining. Most students get accepted with the viewpoint of a star student who is willing to join and step out of their zone.
“I sent in an application for the NHS around the winter and I got accepted in late March. I joined because I thought this was something that shows that I have service and leadership along with character, it also looks very good on resumes and applications for certain activities. Also, I thought that I could try something that I normally wouldn’t go out for and try something out of my comfort zone,” Junior Lexi Benson said.
Members of NHS will have the opportunity to participate in activities around town and help others by volunteering which is an ideal point to put down on college applications and guide yourself to more chances.
“I hope with being in the NHS, it will help me learn to go out and volunteer more in the future and make me a better leader. Also, it can help me with getting into certain colleges,” Lexi Benson said.
