Naviance is a college and career readiness software provider that partners with high schools and other K–12 establishments to equip students with college preparation and career assessment tools.
There are a number of things Naviance is used for at Hastings High, students can see detailed college profiles, receive scholarship help, and obtain PreACT guidance.
Scott Engberg, one of Hastings High’s guidance counselors, helps students navigate through the Naviance program, and understands the benefits of using the tools Naviance has to offer.
The school counselors use Naviance to send transcripts to the colleges that students request, “We, as counselors, can see what colleges students are interested in, career interests, schools students have applied to, and so on,” Engberg said.
Naviance worked with ACT to develop this program to benefit students academically.
There is an ACT prep program students are required to pay for, but what Naviance offers is, “Very, very close to the ACT prep program,” Engberg said.
Many students at Hastings High have raised their ACT scores by four points or more by using the Naviance program.
For some students Naviance can be a little overwhelming, “I think students need to just get into the site and browse through the various parts of Naviance that are available,” Engberg said.
If a student ever has any questions, students can always come to their counselor for help.
At Hastings High, freshmen take the ACT diagnostic test, “Once the test is completed, Naviance will develop a program tailored to each student’s needs,” Engberg said.
The individualized program focuses on areas in which the student needs the most help.
The PreACT test is a shortened version of the actual ACT, “The PreACT will also give you an estimated score on the actual ACT,” Engberg said.
Students can take the PreACT and discover areas in which they need to improve.
There is also a career section that gives students an opportunity to look into some career areas based on an interest inventory they took prior to the test, “Naviance will only help you if you use it,” Engberg said.
Studying on Naviance can help students prep or improve their ACT scores, Naviance has academically improving ACT prep section.
“I recommend career and or college major exploration, ACT practice and preparation, college exploration, various self-exploration tools to help students learn more about themselves, and sending official transcripts to colleges,” Engberg said.
