Unnoticed talent often roams through the halls of Hastings High. Students walk past one another everyday not knowing each other’s’ accomplishments. Recently three students have made the Nebraska Wesleyan Honors Choir. This is a tremendous accomplishment for the choir groups because it is very selective and hard to get in. Only 60 kids across all of Nebraska are chosen to perform together at a conference stretching over three days. Junior Savannah Santos, senior Macie Clawson, and senior foreign exchange student Jannik Loehden.
Most students, let alone an foreign exchange students would crumble due to nervousness, but Jannik isn’t the ordinary foreign exchange student.
“I don’t get scared because I know I will probably not see all the friends I’ve made this year again but I do wish I will see them again,” Loehden said.
Loehden also feels he is having a very wonderful and fun year in choir.
“I’m enjoying it here very much. The kids here are super cool, and very nice. Also Mr. Canady is a great director and I learn a lot from him everyday,” Loehden said.
Savanah Santos discovered her talent for singing in the sixth grade and found something more than just a hobby.
“I don’t just love singing, It’s my passion. It’s something I look forward to everyday,” Santos said.
Santos is also involved in theatre and community plays, given her experience she is very comfortable singing in front of people.
“I have been in theater since I was six years old and I have been singing in front of people for years. I feel the one event that will change everything for me is when I audition for the America’s Got Talent show on the 23rd of this month,” Santos said.
Unlike Santos, senior Macie Clawson will not pursue a music career. She has different plans for the future.
”It is awkward when I go to music or band conventions because most kids are majoring in music and I am majoring in political science and minoring in Middle Eastern studies and economics. Although I’m not pursuing a musical career I would love to continue singing throughout the rest of my life,” Clawson said.
Clawson’s most memorable moments in choir are when she made All State Choir.”The first year I made all state I was not expecting to get it in. I was filled with excitement when I found out. The entire All State Choir experience is amazing, because being in a choir with 400 people where everyone is an extremely talented singer is just very pleasant place to be at,” Clawson said.
With Loehden, Clawson , and Santos selected for the Nebraska Wesleyan Honors Choir, they have put Hastings High on the map for future talent at the school. Students in the performing arts at Hastings High continue to prove they are successful.
