109.25 million is the number of subscribers Netflix has around the world. 52.77 million of them come from inside the United States.
Hardly any of them come from inside Hastings, but that does not mean the users do not know a thing or two about what the program has to offer.
Isabella Nicolarsen, a Hastings Senior High Senior, has subscribed for six years and is a tentative user of the program for at least an hour, an hour and a half a day.
When asked what her favorite show was she responded, “That’s a hard one. I’d have to say Grey’s Anatomy. It’s about a lady doctor who falls in love with a doctor and they do a lot of surgeries. She succeeds in her field and literally everybody else dies or leaves. I like a lot of dramas.”
Nicolarsen who is a fan of dramatic TV shows, also said she was unpleased with Netflix’s recent decision to take off classic high school TV shows, like One Tree Hill. “I used to watch One Tree Hill all the time. And then I got into it and you know what, they got rid of it and now I can’t watch it,” said Nicolarsen.
Even though she was upset, she still adores the program. She even has tips for other high school Netflix users.
“Definitely top notch Grey’s Anatomy, maybe some Scandal if you’re into that stuff,” said Nicolarsen when asked what shows she’d suggest for her peers.
Naomi Pedroza, a junior at Hastings High, has subscribed for four years. Though she couldn’t give an exact number, she says she watches Netflix every day a week.
“My favorite show is probably Pretty Little Liars, but I’d suggest 90210,” said Pedroza.
Ms. Friesen Hastings Senior High’s librarian says she has subscribed to Netflix for seven to eight years.
“I mainly watch it in the summer. I watch The Walking Dead or I watch The 100. Or I watch like old Television shows in the summer while I’m doing things,” said Friesen.
A very popular show on Netflix that has gotten both good and bad criticism is Thirteen Reasons Why. Both Friesen and Nicolarsen had two different opinions about the Netflix Original.
“I didn’t ever watch Thirteen Reasons Why because I thought it was kinda too graphic,” said Friesen.
“Yeah I watched all of it. On my point scale it’s probably like a six,” said Nicolarsen.
All three had one thing in common, and that was a Netflix Club. When asked if they would participate they all said yes.
“If all I had to do was watch TV shows and rate it, heck yeah!” said Nicolarsen.
Netflix has proven to be popular among all generations. With 6,494 different movies and 1,609 different TV shows, it is no surprise the program gets a lot of attention. Is it worth it? Many people seem to think so!
“Subscribe. Do it. Give them money, it’s worth it,” said Nicolarsen.
