With more and more students entering Hastings High School, the halls have become more congested. The new science will help cut down on the amount of students in an area at a time. The new science wing was expected to be complete in time for the 2013-2014 school year but due to nice weather, construction is ahead of schedule. The construction on the new wing began in fall of 2011.
Director of technology and operations, Trent Kelly says that the new wing isn’t an easy task for architects and engineers due to school currently being in session.
“They basically told us it was like performing open heart surgery on a patient walking down the street,” Kelly said.
The new wing comes with a 1.9 million dollar price tag and science teachers are eager to move into the new building.
“Not a lot of teachers get to go through that or experience a whole new building or whole new wing,” Physics Instructor, Jim Fielder said.
With science classes moving to the new 15,000 square feet facility, it opens up seven class rooms in the basement of HHS. Many students and faculty are curious tow what is going to happen with the seven soon to be empty rooms.
“We’re going to remodel those classrooms and they’ll be turned into regular classrooms,” Kelly said.
