Hastings Senior High School has lost previous teachers and gained 15 new ones in just one school year.
During last school year, some of the veteran teachers either retired or moved schools. During this new school year, Hastings High has obtained 15 new teachers. Not only has the school gained new teachers, they have also gained a new counselor and para educators.
The school has acquired all different kinds of teachers in different categories of the school.
“Before coming to Hastings High, I worked as a middle school counselor. There I didn’t work with scholarships or Advanced Placement classes, so I’ve been figuring out that process as I go,” said Mrs. Nicole Schulte, the new counselor.
Several of the new teachers that came to Hastings High this year are familiar with the town of Hastings. Some of them were previously acquainted with schools in the Hastings district.
“I grew up in Hastings and the past two years I’ve lived elsewhere and I wanted to move back to the community,” said Courtney Benscoter, the new family and consumer sciences teacher.
Considering the fact that during the school years of 2020-2021 and 2021-2022, our community had to deal with the unfortunate virus called COVID-19. Even teachers who had been at Hastings High for a while have had troubles with getting to know students and names and so have the new teachers.
One of the many challenges brought to teachers from the pandemic is learning new names.
“I am horrible with names,” said Coach Brian Itzen, the high school PE teacher and the head girls track coach.
Along with troubles and weaknesses, the new teachers of our school also have strengths and toughnesses.
“I would have to say that my biggest strength is how I care for my students and want what is best for them. I love to teach and help students. That’s why I’m here! I also like to work as a team. I am very lucky and blessed that I have an amazing team this year,” said Ms. Wolf, one of our new para educators.
