On December 31, 2017, people all across the United States, and the world celebrated the changing of the calendar year.
People used this time to reflect on the past year. One way people approach the new year is by focusing on things they need to change or things they need to give up. These reflections often come in the form of new year’s resolutions.
Many Hastings High students have chosen to take this time to reflect on themselves and the things that they can improve on.
“My new year’s resolution is to stay positive this coming year because sometimes I’m not always positive,” sophomore Gilliyan Huske said.
Huske hopes this goal will lead her into a great year with lots of new memories.
Senior Isabelle Nicolarsen has goals of a different kind.
“My new year’s resolution is to get organized and to procrastinate less, I realized I was waiting until the last minute to finish things and it would just become way more stressful than it needed to be,” Nicolarsen said.
As a senior, Nicolarsen knows that developing these new habits will help her in college and in her future.
“I’m looking forward to finishing high school and starting college and becoming more independent, “ Nicolarsen said.
The same theme of using 2018 as a starting place for self-improvement can be seen in the goals of senior Jennifer Boeve. She plans to read fifteen books by the end of the calendar year.
“I chose this because I like to read, but too often I spend my free time just watching Netflix or scrolling through social media,” Boeve said.
As another senior, Boeve looks forward to the uncertainty that the future holds with a positive attitude.
“I’m going to a school in Iowa where I won’t know anyone, so it’s exciting to think about all the new people I will meet,” Boeve said.
Finally, many people, including junior Danny Vuong, will use the time of reflection as a way to refocus their athletic goals and reach an overall happier life.
“Living simple, training hard, and living an honest life are really the things that make me happy. In 2018 I’m looking forward to having a great cross country season for my senior year,” Vuong said.
The new year is already underway and these students and many more are working hard and focusing to achieve their goals in 2018.
