Obama has spent the last seven years as president of our country. Some say that he’s been a terrible president and others praise his actions. No matter the opinion, he still has one last year in office and it doesn’t look like he’s gonna slow down now.
On January 16th of 2016 President Obama gave his last State of the Union address. In his speech he discussed specific accomplishments our nation has made since his election in 2009; as well as revealing his last presidential plans. The entire speech was well received by both Republicans and Democrats alike. I believe he included the perfect amount of humor to make for a lite and enjoyable presentation while staying professional enough to be taken seriously on important topics, like our education and safety as students.
On the safety side of things Obama is pushing hard for some form of gun control to be passed before the next election. He has known what he has wanted to do about this for awhile, but now is his opportunity apparently. Obama isn’t fighting to appeal the second amendment; what’s he is trying to do is keep guns out of the wrong hands. Taking away every American’s gun is an unrealistic task either way. Obama has the right idea by strengthening background checks and giving mentally unstable people who shouldn’t have firearms the help they need.
With high school graduation rates at 82 percent, up from 75 percent in 2008, President Obama wants to focus on helping students beyond their 12 year education. As a student the question you’re always asking yourself is, “Can I afford college?” Obama wants more kids saying yes.
“Providing two years of community college at no cost for every responsible student is one of the best ways to do that, and I’m going to keep fighting to get that started this year,” Obama said.
After two years of attendance a student could save up to $7,500 in tuition. I’m all for this plan because it isn’t throwing money at people who won’t use it. It forces them to invest in their education and they will only have this option if they have proved their value as a good student.
President Kennedy was to the moon as Obama wants to be to curing cancer. Vice president Joe Biden lost his son to a brain tumor last year. Since then he’s been devoted to finding a cure. At the time of the announcement Biden will have 10 months before leaving office to make as much progress as possible. Obama has increased the National Institutes of Health’s spending by seven percent and is working to clear anything that may slow research. I think this is a fantastic goal to set, it makes Obama look like one of us, like maybe he really does care about the people.
One thing is for certain, President Obama will not be going out a lame duck.
