The time has come where the seniors take their leave and look back on their high school life. For three years I had looked at this time of the year as a good time since the seniors are gone and there is less space occupied in the hallways. Now, as a senior, this is a hard time. It is a very bittersweet moment in my life. I am happy that we are leaving so we can start our new chapters in our lives, but it is hard because there are some people that I am going to miss.
My senior year was the most fun because it was my last hoorah in high school. As a freshman, I walked around the school, thinking that I was going to get lost and/or bullied because of how big the school is and there being over one thousand people.
I remember that the most interesting part of my freshman year was when I was receiving the Governor’s Point of Light Award in November of 2011. I got this because of my volunteer work with The Zone, an after school program that provides a drug-free, bully-free environment (see my story, “In The Zone” at http://www.tigercubonline.org/2976/student-life/in-the-zone/ for a better look at The Zone).
Until the beginning of my junior year, I wanted to be a social studies teacher. After that though, I had an epiphany, thanks to my uncle, that I always talk about sports, which made me think that I should be a sports journalist. Then, my senior year I decided that I will join the Tiger Cub staff to be a sports writer for the high school, which has really helped me pave my way to college.
I had so many teachers as well that I liked, including my current English teacher, Mr. Greg Mays. He was a teacher that helped me the greatest when it came to writing my college entrance essay, a couple of speeches that I had, and was just able to help me when I had a question about college when I was not able to get a hold of my guidance counselor, Mr. Pat Vogel. I had met Mr. Vogel prior to high school, as he was my brother’s German teacher back in 2007 and 2008. He was also there to help me greatly with my college path and was just there for me. For moral support, I would have to thank Mrs. Megan Ruby, whom I met through The Zone when I was a middle school student going there. She was a volunteer there. The one person that I wanted to keep for last, because she helped me with my aspiration for being a sports journalist/analyst,would be the advisor for the Tiger Cub Online, Mrs. Cathy Davis. If it were not for her, I do not think I would still be pursuing this career path. When I went to my media department interview with Professor Sharon Brooks, I asked Mrs. Davis which articles of mine I should use to show off my talents, and that was a big reason why I received the maximum amount scholarship for the Media Department exclusively for Hastings College. So, all and all, I have to thank you very much, Mrs. Davis, for being my newspaper advisor, and for the help.
