From watching the Oscars on February 24th, I had some of my own opinions on the winners of the actual movies. I will only be covering four of the main categories for the Oscars, but will give a thorough overview of what happened the night when producers, writers, and actors came together to celebrate some of the best works from 2018.
Best Picture:
The award-winning movie, Green Book, was nominated in five Oscar categories, including Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor. This true story follows two completely different people through the south in the early sixties, a racially heated time for America. Dr. Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali), a world-renowned professional pianist, hires Tony Vallelonga (Viggo Mortensen) to protect him during his shows and on tour. It perfectly touches on the relations between different races during that time while also having wonderful music played by Shirley.
Best Actor:
Rami Malek won Best Actor for his amazing roll in Bohemian Rhapsody. His portrayal as Freddie Mercury is so realistic and on the dot. Rami Malek even looks like Freddie Mercury because of the classic teeth, which were exaggerated thanks to makeup, and his ethnicity. I was really surprised at how similar Rami Malek managed to make his voice to the well known Queen Singer. Starting from when the band formed, this film shows when the group Queen was just forming and up until their memorable performance at Live Aid.
Best Actress:
Although I didn’t see The Favourite in theatres, what I have seen has proved that Olivia Colman deserved every bit of her Oscar. Colman plays Queen Anne as she tries to balance sorting out her role as Queen while Britain is at war with France. The speech she gave was a blend between absolutely hilarious and touching.
Best Original Music Score:
This was one of the main categories that really struck me by surprise. Ludwig Göransson was the composer and songwriter for the Marvel movie Black Panther. Ludwig has also won an award for his work in Atlanta and was nominated for the best R&B song at the Grammys in 2018. I had no idea that Black Panther was up for an Oscar for Music (Original Score) because when I hear people talk about Black Panther they don’t even mention the music. I agree that the music in a movie has a drastic effect on how interesting it is and what people think of it, but I’m not sure I saw that in this movie.
